After gathering feedback from staff, volunteers, and other community-based organizations, APSC staff and Council have made some changes to the way volunteers and members engage with the organization. We deeply value and appreciate everyone who engages with APSC—whether it is as a supporter, volunteer, member, staff, or council member. As our organization and community evolves and grows, we would like to share this new structure, which features more clearly defined roles, responsibilities, and expectations.

Roles and responsibilities:

Supporter

A Supporter contributes time or money. They may participate as much or as little as they would like.

Volunteer

A Volunteer makes a firm commitment to giving time, energy, or money on a regular, consistent basis. They will complete a volunteer orientation, take an active role in at least one subcommittee, and uphold APSC’s Volunteer/Membership guidelines. If you are interested in volunteering, please complete this form

Member

After 1+ year of volunteering, a Volunteer may be invited to become a Member depending on the following factors: track record of time commitment and follow through, mission alignment, working well with team/staff, bringing value to the work/organization, and staff capacity to manage additional members. Members will complete a training series (political education, organizational info, program focus areas) and commit to serving as a Member for at least 1 year. They will take an active role in at least one subcommittee, participate in membership meetings, and uphold APSC’s Volunteer/Membership guidelines. Members also have voting rights on decisions such as prioritizing campaign or subcommittee projects; they do not get a vote on all major organizational decisions.

Staff

The staff will take a lead in committee, projects, or campaigns. They will create and manage projects, timelines, and operations. They will also provide support to Volunteers and Members.

Council

The Council is APSC’s main decision-making body for strategic decisions. They approve the annual budget, provide oversight of the Co-Directors, and set the strategic direction of the organization. New council members are nominated and voted on by the Council. As a fiscally sponsored organization, APSC also receives additional support and oversight by the Chinese for Affirmative Action capacity team staff and the Asian Americans for Civil Rights and Equality Board of Directors.
